I have lost three family members to Alzheimer’s Disease. The hardest part for those watching from the sidelines is seeing your loved one trying to come to terms with the confusion, fear and eventual great loss.

I did this version with my friend Russ Brannon on guitar and was recorded in his studio. The photo used is by my cousin, Kyle Strongman, who is a talented, young award-winning photographer. You can view Kyle's work at: kylestrongman.myportfolio.com

They walk into the room, stop and say hello,
I’m supposed to know their faces and their names;
They reach to take my hand, and ask me how I am,
And I just smile and say, I’m not myself today.

There are no hands upon my clock, the days are all the same
And more and more I find that I don’t even know my name.

Who’s in these photographs that hang upon my wall?
The names I can’t recall, stare back with strangers’ eyes;
Were they once souvenirs, of now forgotten years,
Of other times and places, and of happy lives?

They have a garden where I go to when I feel afraid,
Where I can sit beneath the trees and let my memory fade.

What is this ring I wear? Did someone once love me?
And, more importantly, did I love in return?
Did I once hold them near, and say, I love you dear,
And did they whisper back those words as passions burned.

I like to go out in the garden when the birds are there,
For even though I can’t remember they don’t seem to care.

Oh how I long to be, the one that once was me,
But all I know is that I’m not myself today.
